The renovation of and addition to a substantial existing house on an irregular corner site in North Fitzroy aimed to retain the solidity but not noticeably increase the volume of the original building, by adding a courtyard garden between the house and a new kitchen and living addition. This space also allowed for a new entry to the house from the more quiet side street, through the courtyard.
The courtyard space is contained by the main house, the addition which is slightly rotated towards the north and a new fence. From the new addition you can look back to the original house across the courtyard. The addition is low and extends to the back of the property to become part of the fence on the south west corner. The fence, the building and the sliding shade screens are clad in the same dark stained vertical timber. The containment of garden space and built space is treated with equal importance.
