This project works carefully with what is found on the site to find an economic solution to a typical brief for refurbishment of a small inner-city terrace house. The approach to extending is to literally ‘continue’ selected existing forms and materials, for reasons of constructional and town-planning efficiency. However these existing elements are taken to a new conclusion which results in a surprising but logical scale and expression in the mixed urban fabric.
A series of timber trusses span the width of the site and are lined inside and out to make interior space and exterior form. The ways in which these linings meet the building structure and each other at threshold or junction points produces a series of distinct experiential qualities and possibilities for use, relating directly to the way in which the building is made.
